The Apocalypse is nigh.
After teasing a select few fans and journalists with some footage at Comic-Con back in July, Marvel and Fox finally dropped the first official trailer for X-Men: Apocalypse, the third film in director/producer Bryan Singer’s young-mutant trilogy. (It’s the 9th X-Men movie overall.) This time around, the mutants face their biggest adversary yet: the godlike, original mutant Apocalypse, played by Oscar Isaac, who is recognizable underneath all that CGI. Watch the trailer above.
The clip begins with the young Jean Grey (Game of Thrones’ Sophie Turner) having visions of death in her sleep. Though she’s reassured by Professor X (James McAvoy) that it’s just a bad dream, we soon learn that she’s predicting a nightmare worse than anyone could have imagined.
Apocalypse, who rose to prominence in the X-Men comics in the ‘80s and '90s, is a mythical figure with a serious messiah complex. In this 1980s-set film that takes place 10 years after the events of X-Men: Days of Future Past, he’s woken up after thousands of years of sleep, an invincible and immortal figure determined to take control and rain down pain on the world. He can control his fellow mutants — his veins already course with the power of many ancient mutants that he defeated way back when — and so he calls upon several contemporary mutants for help. At his service representing the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse: Magneto (Michael Fassbender), Storm (Alexandre Shipp), Angel (Ben Hardy), and Psylocke (Olivia Munn).
The X-Men head to an all-out civil war, with Apocalypse and his troops hoping to clean the world of unworthy humans and start it anew. Professor X and the remaining X-Men — including Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique, who is back on the side of good — are going to do their best to stop them.
There are several newcomers this time around, including new versions of characters we saw in the earlier batch of X-Men movies. In addition to a younger Storm and Jean Grey, we also meet a new Cyclops (Tye Sheridan). We’re also seeing the first iterations of such mutants as Psylocke and Jubilee (Lara Condor).
Isaac, who will also star in the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens, told Yahoo Movies at Comic-Con about his long-time love for his X-Men villain.
