James Harden had 42 points, nine rebounds and seven assists, and the Houston Rockets beat the Washington Wizards, 109-103, on Wednesday night.

Harden scored 23 points in the second half a day after he finished with a season-low 10 points in a loss at the Brooklyn Nets.

Corey Brewer added 15 points and Patrick Beverly had 14 points to help Houston to its fourth win in five games.

John Wall had 26 points, 12 assists and nine rebounds for Washington. Marcin Gortat tied a season high with 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in his first game back after missing three for personal reasons.

With the score tied at 99-99, Harden stepped back to hit 16-foot jumper over Bradley Beal, absorbed Beal’s foul and hit a free throw to put Houston up by three points with 2:13 left.

The Rockets had a 104-101 lead when Harden reached Wall’s errant pass and fed Corey Brewer for a transition layup to make it a five-point game.

Wall missed a 3-pointer from the baseline, Harden hit two free throws and Dwight Howard hit another to seal the win.

Washington trailed by as many as 15 points in the second quarter and 56-47 at halftime, but led, 63-62, when Wall slammed Beal’s alley-oop feed to cap a 13-0 run.

Howard received a technical foul in the second quarter when he spiked the ball after he was whistled for goaltending Gortat’s shot.

Washington, without the injured Nene, Drew Gooden and Kris Humphries, scored 17 first-quarter points, its fewest in an opening period this season.
