BREAKING NEWS: Court of Appeal Sacks Akwa Ibom State Governor, Orders Fresh Election in 90 days
The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja has nullified the election of the Akwa Ibom state governor Mr Udom Emmanuel saying the Election Petition Tribunal erred when it voided results from only 18 Local Government Areas in the state.
The court granted an appeal filed by the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Okon Umana asking for the cancellation of the election in the entire 31 local government area of the state.
The court in the lead judgment delivered by Justice Adefunke Okojie said the April 11 governorship election in the state did not substantially comply with the provisions of the Electoral Act.
Earlier today (Friday) the appeal court upheld the judgment of the state Governorship Election Petition Tribunal which ordered fresh elections in 18 local governments area of the state in appeal filled by Mr Udom Emmanuel.
Nullifying the entire election however, the appeal court held that the result announced by INEC in favour of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) was allocation of figures as there was no evidence of collation of results at all levels.
The court subsequently ordered the independent electoral commission (INEC) to conduct a fresh governorship poll in the state within 90 days.
